Sports Team, Gulp! — Sealed LP (Island Records, 2022)

Gulp! is the second studio album by British indie rock band Sports Team, released in 2022 through Island Records. Building on the momentum of their debut, the album presents a refined version of the band’s energetic, guitar‑driven sound. This sealed LP edition features the green cover artwork and jet‑black vinyl, with the shrinkwrap intact and the sleeve showing no signs of opening or handling wear.

Musically, the album continues Sports Team’s focus on sharp rhythms, direct melodies, and a lively, sometimes sardonic vocal delivery. The band’s characteristic interplay between guitars, bass, and percussion remains central, creating a sound that is both immediate and tightly structured. The production emphasises clarity and punch, allowing each element to contribute to the album’s sense of movement and urgency. The songs often balance upbeat instrumentation with lyrical themes that explore modern life, personal tension, and observational commentary.

Across the tracklist, Gulp! moves between driving, high‑tempo pieces and more measured moments that highlight the band’s melodic sensibilities. The arrangements use clean guitar lines, rhythmic precision, and dynamic shifts to create contrast within the album. Vocals sit prominently in the mix, maintaining the conversational tone that has become a defining feature of Sports Team’s style. The album’s pacing supports this mixture, offering a sequence that feels cohesive while allowing each track to establish its own identity.

The physical presentation of this LP edition includes the distinctive green cover artwork associated with the release. The design uses bold colour and simple composition to reflect the album’s direct, contemporary aesthetic. The sealed shrinkwrap protects the sleeve surface, and the artwork remains sharp and unfaded. As the record has not been opened, no internal grading of the disc or inner sleeve is possible. The sealed state preserves the album exactly as issued, maintaining the integrity of the release as it left the manufacturer.

Within the band’s catalogue, Gulp! represents a continuation of the themes and musical approach introduced on their debut. It refines their sound without departing from the core elements that define their identity: energetic performance, clear melodic structure, and a blend of humour and tension in the lyrical content. The album’s production supports this direction, presenting a polished but still lively interpretation of their style.

The LP format provides a physical representation of the album’s musical and visual identity. Vinyl presentation emphasises the warmth and immediacy of the instrumentation, aligning with the band’s guitar‑driven sound. The sleeve design, track sequencing, and overall presentation reflect the care taken in shaping the album as a complete work, offering listeners a tangible version of the release.

This sealed copy presents Gulp! in its original condition, with the shrinkwrap intact and the sleeve retaining its finish. The artwork, physical presentation, and musical content all contribute to a release that captures Sports Team’s contemporary indie sound. As a physical object, the LP offers a clean, untouched example of a modern UK indie album from a band continuing to develop its identity.
