Gordon Willbond Oil Painting, Ye Olde Salutation Inn Nottingham, Framed
An original oil painting by the British twentieth-century artist Gordon Willbond depicting Ye Olde Salutation Inn, one of Nottingham’s most recognisable historic buildings.
Executed on board and presented in a substantial gilt frame, the work displays Willbond’s characteristic use of impasto, with paint applied in thick layers to create pronounced texture and depth across the composition. The technique is particularly effective in the timber-framed façade, masonry and rooflines of the building, where changing light reveals the physical structure of the paint surface and gives the scene a strong sense of character and permanence.
Gordon Willbond is known for his traditional landscapes, architectural subjects and maritime commercial commissions. His work encompassed watercolour, gouache, pen and ink and oil painting, often focusing on historic buildings, streetscapes and locations of local significance. He was also commissioned to produce artwork for Cunard Line passenger menus during the mid-twentieth century and his works remain popular.
The subject of this painting is one of Nottingham’s most celebrated buildings. Ye Olde Salutation Inn is a Grade II listed public house with origins dating back to the medieval period and claims a history extending to the thirteenth century. The site occupies an important place in Nottingham’s architectural and social history and remains one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Beneath the building lie extensive rock-cut caves, some believed to pre-date the inn itself, while the structure has evolved over many centuries into the form recognised today.
Rather than attempting a purely architectural study, Willbond captures the inn as a living part of Nottingham’s historic streetscape. The weathered façade, irregular rooflines and distinctive frontage lend themselves particularly well to his painterly style, resulting in a work that balances local history with decorative appeal.
