Peronnik the Fool 1933 Dual Signed Limited Edition No. 464 of 525

A dual signed limited edition of Peronnik the Fool by George Moore, published by George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., London, in 1933. Illustrated throughout with finely executed engravings by Stephen Gooden, one of the leading British engravers of the twentieth century. Issued in a limited edition of 525 copies for sale and presentation, this example is copy number 464 and has been signed by both George Moore and Stephen Gooden on the limitation page.

Based upon the Breton folk tale of Peronnik, Moore’s retelling combines Celtic mythology, folklore and moral allegory. The volume is particularly noted for the engravings of Stephen Gooden, one of the foremost British engravers of the twentieth century, whose work complements the text with a series of finely executed illustrations.

George Moore was among the most important Irish literary figures of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, whilst Gooden’s engravings established him as one of the leading practitioners of the revival of wood and copper engraving in Britain. The combination of text and illustration makes this one of the more attractive limited editions associated with both men.

This copy has been rebound in full leather, retaining the original title panel onlaid to the upper board. The binding presents attractively and is complemented by suede-effect endpapers, top edge gilt and untrimmed deckle edges.

An appealing signed limited edition combining literary, illustrative and fine press interest.
