Wilfred Thesiger Desert Marsh and Mountain First Edition Association Copy
A first edition, first printing of Desert, Marsh and Mountain: The World of a Nomad by Wilfred Thesiger, published by William Collins Sons & Co. Ltd. in 1979.
This copy is accompanied by a handwritten gift note on Wilfred Thesiger’s printed letterhead from 34 Montpelier Square, Knightsbridge, London S.W.7, for many years Thesiger’s principal London residence when not travelling in Arabia, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, or East Africa. The note reads:
“To remind you of Libya! I have not written in it in case you already have it! V. happy Christmas.”
The note provides an appealing piece of provenance and suggests that the book was presented personally by Thesiger as a Christmas gift. Particularly interesting is his explanation that he deliberately refrained from inscribing the volume itself in case the recipient already owned a copy, preserving the book in its published state whilst nevertheless providing a personal association with the author.
Desert, Marsh and Mountain brings together some of Thesiger’s most memorable experiences among the peoples of North Africa and the Middle East. Widely regarded as one of the twentieth century’s greatest travel writers and explorers, Thesiger combined exceptional powers of observation with a deep respect for the communities among whom he lived. His works remain highly regarded by collectors of travel, exploration, Middle Eastern studies, and modern first editions.
The inclusion of the original handwritten note elevates this copy beyond a standard first edition. Its direct reference to Libya is especially appropriate given Thesiger’s long association with the country and provides a tangible connection to the author’s life and travels.
