A Portrait of Robert Lenkiewicz, 2005, Dr Philip Stokes, White Lane Press
A first edition of A Portrait of Robert Lenkiewicz, published by White Lane Press, Plymouth, in 2005 with an introductory text by Francis Mallett.
Featuring photographs by Dr Philip Stokes, this substantial volume provides a visual record of the life, work and surroundings of Robert Lenkiewicz, one of the most distinctive and controversial British artists of the late twentieth century. Through extensive photographic documentation, Stokes records the artist within his studio environment and amongst the paintings, books, collections and personal effects that formed the backdrop to his creative life.
Lenkiewicz was closely associated with Plymouth, where his large-scale figurative paintings, social projects and uncompromising artistic vision made him one of the most recognisable cultural figures in the city. Rather than concentrating solely on completed works, this volume offers a broader portrait of the artist’s world, capturing the spaces in which he lived and worked and preserving details of a unique creative environment.
The photographs provide valuable context for Lenkiewicz’s paintings and writings, documenting both the artist himself and the remarkable surroundings that became an integral part of his public identity. As such, the volume serves not only as a photographic record but also as an important source for collectors, researchers and those with an interest in modern British art.
An attractive and increasingly sought-after publication relating to one of the most distinctive figures in post-war British art.
