Complete Electrical Engineering Data Sheets (48 Sheets), George Newnes, c.1930s–40s

Issued by George Newnes as part of their early mid-century technical reference programme, this complete portfolio of Electrical Engineering – Data Sheets presents a full run of forty‑eight loose‑leaf diagrams designed for practical use by working engineers. These sets were produced to accompany Newnes’ multi‑volume electrical encyclopaedias and were intended for workshop and site reference, with individual sheets frequently removed, used, or lost. Complete surviving examples are therefore uncommon, particularly in this condition.

The portfolio is housed in the original blue pebbled cloth folder, blind‑embossed to the front panel and titled in gilt along the spine. Inside, two pockets hold the full sequence of numbered sheets: 1–24 to the left, 25–48 to the right. Each sheet carries a detailed technical diagram printed in crisp mid‑century linework, covering a wide range of industrial and commercial electrical applications. Subjects include motor specifications from G.E.C., Ferranti and Brook; theatre and stage‑lighting switchboards; escalator control circuits; discharge and neon lighting; and other practical installations from the period.

The visual appeal of the set is considerable. The diagrams retain the clarity and precision characteristic of Newnes’ technical output, with blueprint‑style layouts and clean margins that highlight the design language of early twentieth‑century engineering. For collectors of industrial history, electrical design, or mid‑century technical illustration, this is a strong and complete example of a format that rarely survives intact.

Condition Report

Folder: Blue pebbled cloth boards in very good condition, with light rubbing to spine ends and corners. Gilt titling to the spine remains clear and bright. Blind‑embossed front panel clean and well‑defined. Hinges firm; structure sound.

Contents: All forty‑eight sheets present and correctly ordered across both pockets. Paper stock shows only mild age‑toning consistent with period. Diagrams clean, margins uncreased, and linework crisp throughout. No tears, losses, or annotations observed. Pocket interiors clean and intact.

Overall: A complete and well‑preserved mid‑century technical portfolio, uncommon in this state and visually strong across all sheets.
